    Hello,

I understand the frustration that you have while typing. However SwiftKey does not have the option to deep customize. Hope you can understand the idea that more customization means the app goes more complicated to set up and to use.

I also understand that as a dev or programmer, we want to modify the apk to the way we personally want. I am afraid it's not a good thing to do in terms of "stable", I am not sure root access would allow you to do that. I don't recommend to do so anyway.

But you can always suggest your preferred layout here. Post an image, add some necessary explanations. I'll pass it to our mod team.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I thought this might be the answer. I was hoping that there would be a way to just make my own language for SwiftKey, and install it into it's data directory, or something like that.

At the moment my own layout has it's flaws, so I'm going to work on it a bit. The "Multiling O" keyboard allows me to change the layout and has pretty good predictions, so it will do for now. It's better than JBak for predictions, but no replacement for SwiftKey!

Now I have to write a program to figure out a layout which keeps keys separated.

On qwerty I continually mix up "in/on, out/put, if/of", so some of the most common words ever, which means I have to always check my screen.

On my layout vowels are spread out, so that fixes a lot of problems. but I've already found similar words with consonants close together.

I'm glad that I could recommend my layout to the devs, but this would be a bit impractical since it's not perfect yet, and I'm going to change the layout a lot, so the continual updates would be too much hassle for them.

Maybe when I have figured out a decent layout I could share it :).

    Hi Simon,

To be honest, I run into the same story of "in/on, out/put, if/of" sometime.

But before you spend too much time on the programming, you can simply share us an image of the layout. For example using Illustrator or Experience Design. It's a very early phase at this moment. I'm afraid that if devs didn't accept the layout, you would spend your effort for nothing. I suggest we keep things simple in the beginning.

If things went well, we might have a special program in our VIP community, especially for programmer/dev like you who wants to help to build a better SwiftKey. I'll check with the team about this program.

    What do you think?

I'm happy messing around with keyboard layouts, because I know I can get one thats almost perfect.

My original layout was based on the Dvorak layout, but with the vowels moved around. I have found a few mixed up words quickly, so it's not too great.

Since you asked for an image, I did the same idea with qwerty.

Basically the main problem seems to be vowels being too close together. Qwerty has "UIO" all next to each other, Dvorak has all vowels next to each other.

Vowels have to be on all 3 lines too, since this helps with swyping.

Here's an image of my layout which I call Qwarty

Here's what I've changed to Qwerty.

I moved the letter 'p' to the bottom row, which makes the top two rows both 9 keys long.

I put the vowels in order 2 keys in on each side, and put 'u' in the middle, because "You are the center of your universe". Seeing this order makes it a bit easier to learn the layout.

If you're curious about how I learn a layout quickly, it's really easy. I practice typing the alphabet in chunks. I type abc abc abc def def def ghi ghi ghi, etc.

Then I type the whole alphabet a few times and also "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog". Doing this a few times a day lead to me learning how to touch type in a few days. I've learnt how ot touch type on Dvorak and Qwerty.

EDIT: I forgot to say. Just ignore the symbols on the keys, they're probably all messed up or uncommon ones.

    Easy solution...

Give users the possibility to create a layout in a text file.

In the settings, we could select where is our custom layout text file.

That should be easy for the dev team.

And us the power users would be SO HAPPY !

So, what do you think ?

    Hello,
It's okay, the image size is currently unchangeable. I will let the web designer know.

Please note that not everyone is good at programming or create layout on their own. It's always very tricky to find a balance of "customization" and "to keep things simple". Personally, I'm not a fan of creating customized layout.
But you can always submit the request if you think it's necessary. The team will evaluate.

Yeah, I was thinking the same, we need to customize the layout. Like Intro key 2 rows up (alongside L key) and Tab key in the foreground, that would be perfect for me. I love the themes and customization. Thank you so much for the App

Still no option to edit layout? I just want to remove few unnecessary symbols that I never use and replace them with others that are hidden in submenus, but are being used very often.

The possibility to customize the layout would be very much welcome..

Things I would change right away:

    1) I hit the period key instead of other keys way too often. It's annoying when as a consequence swiftkey inserts a space and a capital, messing the whole visual aspect of the phrase and forcing me to go back. It sounds counter-intuitive, but I would move the period key into the "keep pressed" group, if that makes sense, together with comma and other marks, leaving that key to just not do anything. Not for everybody, perhaps, but I know it would simplify my life.

    2) I would group the brackets currently buried into the O and P, T and Y keys together with the K and L keys. I feel there is a programmer/developer/mathematician bias here, towards the importance of those extra brackets, which I personally never use.

    3) Since I write in English and Italian, I would make the accents of my region easier and more accessible. There's a bunch of accents I never use I have to slide over before I get to those I want.

    4) ...much more that I could think of.

Rather than a text file layout that needs to be compiled by hand, or a graphic tool within swiftkey that would make the app cumbersome and scary to the regular user, how about an extra app, to create layout that can be loaded separately, sort of like themes can be loaded as separate apps?

Please add possibility to modify layouts through the text file.
I really only need to add one letter to the language instead of adding new entire language.
Sometimes there are very similar languages, I want to add a single letter to long tap menu because I'll use it really rarely and it's not worth to add another language to switch through.

Most of the problems I was mentioning in my message above can be solved, at least on Android, by using Exi for Swiftkey. It's an Xposed module that allows for a certain customization of the layout, at least as far as long tap/popup keys are concerned. Also allows to make the period mark only respond to long tap. Very useful. Requires Xposed and root. For Android only obviously.

Still no way for editing layouts? I believe that english speaking peoplejust don't realize how cumbersome your keyboard become for multilingual user. That's why you don't want to listen to us😔
