Hi Don Krebs thank you for your feedback. We've redesigned how our split layouts work to support a wider range of devices and form factors, and this means we had to remove the option to add arrow keys in the middle of the keyboard.

This is very disappointing. Having the arrow keys along the bottom makes them hard to use and inefficient in my opinion, mainly for three reasons (none of which are muscle-memory-related, I'm open to learning new layouts):
    • The added height obscures so much of my screen (with the height adjusted to the minimum usable size) that sometimes it's impossible to see what I'm typing, and, in applications such as this forum, makes auto-resize elements too small. This also makes it necessary to use the arrow keys more often, which is extra frustrating.
    • Placing the arrows horizontally, adjacent to the navigation bar, with the integrated collapse button at the bottom, is a) harder to aim for, necessitates eye focus and thus is slower to use, and b) creates a false two-row array, making it more logical to tap the collapse button than the down arrow under the space bar.
    • Typing is slowed down additionally because placing the arrow keys horizontally adjacent to the return key adds the risk of accidentally submitting content when using the right arrow. This has led me to a habit of not using it at all, or very slowly and deliberately, interrupting my interaction. Yes, previously I would occasionally tap the arrows accidentally, but that has a much lesser consequence than hitting the return/send key.

I hope there is a solution because the arrow keys are one of the main reasons I choose SwiftKey over other keyboards.

I would be interested in trying a smaller gap in the split keyboard if arrow keys could be located to one side. This would place the down arrow above the shift key, backspace key, or, in one-handed mode, above the expand button. I find the persistent side-switch button unnecessary anyway, it could be replaced by left and right modes.

Thank you for considering my suggestions, and I hope this can be acted upon quickly, before too many users experience the drop in efficiency or have unfortunate experiences with the submit soft key.

Hi b.noreen thank you for your detailed feedback, we appreciate it. To better track feedback/requests, we suggest submitting a feature request here https://support.swiftkey.com/hc/en-us/requests/new.

Out of curiosity, have you tried enabling cursor control? If you enable the new cursor control feature in your 'Typing' settings, you can move the cursor by holding & dragging the spacebar, so you don't need to take up screen space with arrow keys. Learn more: https://bit.ly/31Wgf7U

Hi Deniz, thanks for your reply. Yes, I have tried the cursor control feature. It is useful in some circumstances, but I find it slower to use, and less efficient. Additionally, without the ability to navigate with the fine control offered by the arrow keys, you cannot, for instance, move the cursor up and down line by line within a piece of text. Thank you for the suggestion to move this to a feature request thread. The link you posted, however, does not seem to work. Is there somewhere else I should be looking?

Hi b.noreen thank you for getting back. You should be able to move your cursor up and down.

When you click on the link, do you get an error? What happens?

Hi, you're right, I can move up and down, just not one line at a time. When I click on the link it brings me to the following page, with no form to fill:

Hi b.noreen thanks for the screenshot. Have you tried to clear your browsers cache and cookies? Doing so should address the issue, if not, please let me know.
