    Hi Steve,

This cannot be done at this time. When adding punctuation, that extra space should be deleted and the punctuation should snap back to the end of the word. Unless the languages you may be using, like French, intentionally add that extra space.

Hashtags are a bit tricker. I hardly ever get spaces with hashtags, but this is something we're exploring on how to improve.

This! Only end punctuation (.!?,) snaps back so putting an 's to form a possessive or putting a : after a word means having to go back and delete the useless space... Usually after I've forgotten and already typed the punctuation. And adding the extra space in the middle of the sentence because I've added or changed word(s) is just kind of annoying.

Automatic spaces should definitely only be inserted before a word when it is typed like Gboard does. Or just letting me turn it off and type them manually would be preferable.

    @brett,

Adding a 's should not leave a space. I just wrote a word and added the 's and it worked fine? Can you give me an example of how this works otherwise.

Also, people have different typing styles, habits and expectations. We do our best to be "smart" about what the keyboard does.

We understand auto spaces can be tricky. We are always working on improving this.

    John 's
    Claire' s
    Dax 's
    Mike' s
    Kevin 's
    George' s
    Sarah 's
    Lisa' s
    Alex 's

I'm intrigued by the every other result of my test, but all of those were typed with gestures and then I tapped out the 's, which is the way I usually do possessives as it doesn't always recognize the name correctly when adding the s unless it is very common.

Certainly not a programmer /developer... I am having trouble understanding why this option is not easily added to turn off.
This has been an issue for a minute. This affects me when signing into sites/apps (for the username) if selecting the autofill option of my username it will add a space which if I don't notice it (because it can't be seen, unless I again tap the box to see where the cursor is) The site login will reject my username because a space can be a valid character.

If i put a carrot on a stick, will you chase faster at fixing this soon?

    Hi Shannon,

Do you have some examples of a site we can test this on. I believe this is something we fixed a while ago. Maybe it's slipped back in.

Unfortunately no, this is not something I have been tracking. Next time I notice it, I will update this thread (might take a bit, I don't live in my phone like most).

No worries, just try and get back to me on this. I will keep an eye out for it myself.

So I am noticing the auto spacing when selecting a number prediction like in survey sites that ask for my zip code. It doesn't do it in all sites but I use e-rewards.net (but they forward to client sites, so I can't give specific sites). It may not help but if I select a number auto predict and IF it auto spaces the site returns "input valid zip code".

I'm regularly using Swiftkey with German and English and this is the single worst pain point with it.

I'm noticing this both in single line input fields (short item descriptions, e-mail subject line, ...) in a number of apps, where using autocompletion for the last word leaves a superfluous space at the end of the text, as well as in any multi-line text input (like the very input field I'm typing this reply in now), where e.g. each time I complete a sentence and press Enter to start a new paragraph a superfluous space gets left behind at the end of the preceding paragraph.

Hello, for myself I find it more inconvenient than convenient for a space to be inserted after tapping a word on the top row or when tapping the space bar to enter a word. Is it being worked on so Autospace can be turned off with a toggle in the settings?

Im so annoyed by this autospace SwiftKey forces upon us! Other than that it's such an amazing and very useful keyboard. Im hoping to god that the autospace nuisance be atleast given a toggle on or off feature in it's settings. Till then I will continue to spend more unnecessary time backspacing to remove and delete what should already have been done!!! BUMMER!

My thoughts exactly Ramiro! The autospace is the only thing I have an issue with. If they would just add a toggle that is all that is needed. I submitted a request recently for them to add the toggle.

Yes, please! This is the biggest complaint I have with SwiftKey and the reason I mostly use Gboard. Gboard does space insertion perfectly:

    • When swyping a word or tapping a letter, a space is inserted before the word/character if a space is needed (the previous character is a letter or an end of sentence punctuation)
    • Trailing spaces are never added

With SwiftKey, I need to make the corrections all the time:

    • Remove the last space at the end of an entry for anything that doesn't end in sentence punctuation. This is constantly frustrating.
    • Manually add a space after inserting a period/comma. If I just continue swyping, the word appears attached to the punctuation, which is almost never correct.

While filling out log ins, my mail id appears on prediction and as I tap, there is this extra space I don't ever need and if I forget to delete, will result in my unable to log in.
I wish SwiftKey fixes this problem of inserting space after predictions

Do you plan to fix it ?

    Thanks

Hey devs, it's hightime you fixed this simple bug, people are getting upset about it everywhere on the Support forums, Reddit, YouTube, Android Central, literally everywhere.

Please, stop adding these unnecessary auto-spaces to punctuation marks. These spaces come automatically while we're in the swiping/gesture mode. A space before apostrophe mark ' or a space before the colon or semicolon : ;. Also there is absolutely no need for space after single or double inverted commas ' ". Whenever I want to put a word in quotes, Swiftkey irritatingly adds space like this " Hello ". Please, stop these auto spaces for punctuation marks. It's too annoying having to go back and delete those spaces while performing speedy gesture input.

Same here, login is pain in the ... with those unnecessary spaces. Correct me if I'm wrong - SwiftKey keyboard was made to make typing easy & fast, isn't it? But like many other users, I'm wasting even more time to correct those useless spaces! I've compared typing times with different keyboards, and results of that competition was frustrating: SwiftKey with it's autospace is constantly losing to other keyboards without autospace. So why don't you just make it happen - allow us just to turn it off? I love your keyboard, I'm using it for a long time & installed it on all my devices & most of my friends did it too but I'm so tired to fight with empty spaces...

Exactly Виталий Бычков! SwiktKey was made to make typing fast, but this puts a serious break in the typing process.

For all punctuations, All they need to do is use the same logic which is currently being used for comma, period, exclamation mark and question mark. None of the latter 4 cause a problem, it is only the other punctuation marks which get auto spaced all the time leading to hair tears!

Seriously, why not add an option for this? whenever I'm typing a url, a space is added after each dot. this is incredibly annoying.

This has obviously annoyed a number of people... not to mention those that are not aware of this thread. Please add an option for this - designing a predicate for this function should not be too difficult. It's getting way too painful to keep using swiftKey.

This keyboard doesn't crash once a day like Gboard, but I'm considering going back since you can't type out a website with Swiftkey without it messing up the ".site" part. I do not with for a keyboard to fill in any characters that I do not press.

Emagine writing in a language that often put words together with no space between them (Norwegian). I am so angry that I'm about to break my phone. I'm doing it. I I'm throwing my phone now. Hard into the wall. All because of this incredible annoying keyboard SwiftKey(that works remarkable except this horrible detail). I just had to tell someone. Thank you.

Just wanted to add another voice desperately pleading for an option to disable the autospacing. Login prompts are the most egregious, as "invisible" trailing spaces in credentials can ultimately lead to account lockouts if the user doesn't realize that's what's causing the authentication failures. But beyond that, if I'm inserting a punctuation between two letters in a string with no spaces, I usually do NOT want a space to be arbitrarily inserted. I understand that in proper English text it is often desirable, but this is the age of Twitter and character-limited text fields. Adding an arbitrary space after a carefully inserted punctuation character can often result in a character being truncated from the END of our string!

I totally get that these behaviors and preferences are diverse and impossible to predict on a case-by-case basis. All you have to do is give us the option to disable it completely so we can decide for ourselves which style we want to prioritize. One person's treasured convenience is another's trash nuisance.

Preach on brother Ryan... That's what I was trying to say... If i select an auto fill of my username and a space is added that I don't see... I am prompted invalid credentials and then think i need to reset my password... And exactly right, many times in gooder engrish.. The spacing is helpful... So just give us an easy on/off button... Working on it they say... It seems, not hard enuf.

    JUST ADD A MANUAL MODE!
I don't ever want my keyboard to add a space - it's easy for me to add it myself, and really is almost automatic after years of typing experience.
I can do it myself - and you don't always know when & where I want a space. So how about a "Never" option for the autospace "feature"?
