[Not a SwiftKey Bug] Samsung SMS-emoji icon makes Samsung Keyboard crash
AnsweredPressing the emoji icon when writing an SMS (built in function on Samsung Galaxy S6) makes the Samsung Keyboard to crash while using Swiftkey. This hasen't been a problem until the new update came out for the phone about a week ago.
You have to restart your phone, and uninstall Swiftkey to prevent the notification from popping up, you can't use the keyboard otherwise.
I've tried other keyboard apps and some of them have the same issue.
I really love Swiftkey and I've used it for many years. Can you please come up with a fix, the problem is EXTREMLY annoying.
Thanks!
I have exactly same problem (also Galaxy S6 and problem started recently).
Found another, although weird, way to 'fix' the problem when it occurs:
Go to settings -> General Administration -> Language and Input -> Virtual Keyboard -> choose SwiftKey keyboard -> go into Language settings.
I have two language layouts installed, one for English and one for Danish. Usually when I select the English option it just brings me to a list of options, but when the problem occurs it first pops up with a list where I have to choose either the Samsung keyboard or SwiftKey keyboard. When I choose the SwiftKey keyboard, I am then presented with the usual list, and the problem has disappeared.
I hope this helps with debugging and fixing it.
Thank you Thomas, I will try this and see how it works! Danskjävel!!! :)
Thank you for reporting the issue and for bringing probable solution.
In my opinion, if it occurs to other keyboard as well, it seems not a SwiftKey problem. I'll contact the mod team. Can you report to Samsung at the meantime?
Thank you!
I have same problem of Thomas.
Me too. If I use the Samsung emoticon it says Samsung keyboard not working. When I go into languages it has changed from swift key to Samsung emoticons.
Hello everyone,
We've been seeing more reports of this, can you please list the info.
Exactly the same problem, starting occurring since Android N update!
Device: Samsung Galaxy S6.
OS: Android N
SwiftKey version: Latest (re-installed, same problems)
@james,
Look at my first bullet point; can you please provide your devices model #. I don't mean "Samsung S6" It will be like GT-65758 or something.
This bug may be impacting devices with a certain chip set, which is why I'm asking for this.

This is so annoying.
Anyone know if this is a problem SwiftKey can patch or is this Samsung's problem?
Must be a Samsung Problem.
Same issue here, but with "Smart Keyboard Pro", no Swift keyboard installed. When I hit the emoticons button while typing a text message it sent the Samsung keyboard app into a crash loop. Even I deactivated all other keyboards now, have restarted the phone, wiped the cache, it still continually crashes the Samsung keyboard and I can currently not type anything on the phone.
Couldn't be bothered reading through all of the comments so I'm not sure if someone has mentioned this temporary solution but here goes:
Use the emoji button on the SwiftKey keyboard itself rather than the emoji button to the left of the "SEND" button. If you accidentally press the latter and the keyboard crashes, simply go into your settings and re-set Swiftkey as your default keyboard.
Hope this helps for now!
This makes it interesting, if it's happening with other 3rd party keyboards, this might be an OS/SMS app bug.
Two things I personally recommend:
Hello everyone,
As we continue to look into this, I have a favor to ask. Can any of you try downloading another 3rd party keyboard to see if the same crashes happen when using that 3rd party keyboard.
A few examples are:
This can help us determine if it's related to SwiftKey or something else.
Thanks,
Ryan
Ryan,
I just tried it with Swype, and it looks like it has the same problem.
Thanks!
Same issue with Gboard.
When hitting the emoticon key on the text entry line (before keyboard has opened) in Samsung messages there is an error. Samsung messages crashes and continues to give crash notices every 5-10 seconds. Going into settings->Language and input You can see that the Default keyboard has been switched away from Swiftkey or Gboard and is now blank.
Setting the default back to Gboard or swiftkey stops the error and opens the keyboard with no entry field as if the app was continuously trying to open the keyboard without success.
Having same issues as well. At one point had to do a hard reset as nothing worked.
Thanks to everyone who tried this. It appears it is a bug with the SMS app is the issue is happening with other keyboards.
I spoke to one user who said their SMS app got an update and it fixed the issue. Not sure how/when the update was received, but when I find out more I will post here.
Thanks for everyones time and patience.
best,
Ryan
I have Samsung S6 Edge Plus and my wife has Samsung S6 and same issues. Below has worked for us so far going on over a month:
1. Hold the power button down (like powering down) and click Emergency Mode and turn it on.
2. After it is completely turned on, turn emergency mode off.
3. Give it a minute or two to convert it back and then go to your settings and in the input settings, change back to SwiftKey. Then click on virtual keyboard and select SwiftKey again. (It may ask which keyboard again here and of course select SwiftKey).
4. Go to messages or wherever and see if it works.
It worked for both mine and my wife's phone. Good Luck!
Another person having this issue told me they received an update from Samsung for the SMS app and it fixed it.
As this issue is happening with other keyboards, it's confirmed it's not a SwiftKey issue.
The big question is, if Samsung have sent a update to fix this SMS problem, is this fix a worldwide push and then you have wait for your mobile providers to then send the push through so might be weeks before most users receive any fix
Thanks Ryan P for recommending Android Messages. No emoji button problems and is better than the stock Samsung app anyway imo. I advise everyone here to install it (it's an official Google app)
Hi Justin,
I'm not sure! I don't think it would take as long as a normal OS update I presume. I will update this thread when I know more.
Thanks,
Ryan
Thanks Ryan, took advice from earlier threads and now on Android messaging. Emoji seem to work with that. So definitely looking like it's the Samsung messaging.
Do we have any update with reference to this last thread been nearly a month
Hi Justin,
There are no further updates to be made from the SwiftKey side. This is a Samsung bug. The Samsung keyboard is crashing when the emoji button is pressed inside their SMS app.
There is nothing SwiftKey can do about this.
Samsung should be pushing out some sort of update to sort this out. Or as I suggested, use a different SMS app.
This is beyond the control of what we can do.
Thanks for your time and understanding.
