Special characters not showing on main keyboard

On my Swiftkey main keyboard, I can see the special characters above the main keys. My friend just installed Swiftkey, and the special characters don't show up. If you hold down the main key, the special characters show, but who can remember where each special character is hiding? I have checked all settings, and don't find anything about turning special characters on and off. Help please!
