    Hi,
I believe it's because the app you're using doesn't fully support GIF functions. SwiftKey now detects whether the text filed supports GIF. If yes (like Facebook messenger, Textra), the GIF will be inserted ; if not, the link of the GIF will be inserted. You can also test whether the text fields fully support GIF by using Gboard GIF function.

Its the Samsung Messenger app on the Note 8. This used to work in the previous update. Sometimes it will insert the GIF other times it will insert only the URL... Seems inconsistent.

    Hello everyone,

Some SMS apps have an attachment limit. We are trying to find a nice medium where if the attachment is too large, we insert the URL.

There are also issues with the carrier in which you use which can restrict the attachment size.

We are figuring these out as new reports come in. So thanks for reporting these while we look into them more.

Messenger? Android Messages? What is the issue now?

What carrier? What exactly is happening?

No problem. If you detect the GIF is too large, could you provide a quick pop-up informing the end user its converting it to a URL?

    Keep up the great work.

    @Dinkler

Please read the posts above. It is a change from our side. Maybe you didn't have the problem, but we received many reports of GIF feature is not fully supported in Samsung SMS. So that the change was made for a better overall user experience.

I am having the same exact problem. App use to work great. New update of the app only inputs web address when a GIF is selected. On every app I use. Sms, fb messenger, WhatsApp etc. Droid samsung s8+.
I tried installing and re-install. No help. App use to work perfect.

As GIFs are still sort of new to SwiftKey, we will continue to tweak the experience.

We are trying to find the best way to support GIFs in a way that works well for all users.

There are certain restrictions by individual carriers and SMS apps as well as overall GIF size that we are working on.

So thanks for your feedback and speaking up. This helps us identify the issues.

It happens to me when using the stock Samsung messages app. When adding gifs using the SwiftKey keyboard, it only add the url. When I add the same gif using other methods (add from gallery or add using GIPHY app) it works fine. Please fix this. It was working fine before the update. Smh

So there are two issues that make things complicated with GIF insertions

    1) Some SMS apps have size restrictions as to what you can send, we've noticed that the Samsung and Sony SMS apps are the biggest culprit here.

    2) Your carrier can also impose a limit on what can be attached.

So we are trying to work around both of these scenarios to know when to try and insert the actual GIF or the link.

This mostly impacts the US as we are one of the few countries that use MMS compared to WhatsApp type of chat applications where the limit does not matter.

We have a new release coming out that should improve this - but more work is to be done.

If you are not sold on your stock SMS app, I might suggest looking at alternatives in the Play Store that are updated more regularly.

Thanks for your time and patience while we continue to work on this.

    best,

    Ryan, SwiftKey Community Manager

@Ryan, thank you for all the engagement and good work!

I would totally drop my Samsung Messaging app in a heart beat, but I'm required to use it to support my Samsung Gear S3 watch. Once I change to a different app, my SMS/MMS message no longer sync with my Gear.

    Net/Net: Wish I could, but can't

    Thanks,

    Jared

    Hi Jared,

That is totally understandable, we ideally don't want anyone to change to something they are happy with.

It was just a suggestions, it's also kind of lame the watch only works with that SMS app.

Either way, this work is not done and should continue to get better as we learn more about these issues.

Is it possible to revert? I just started having this issue a this morning on my Note 8. Using the stock messenger app, and it was working fine last night. Now I just get URLs.

At the very minimum, this should be configurable. I'm using a Samsung messaging app on an AT&T branded Samsung note 8 with Advanced Messaging turned on. There's a 10mb limit on advanced messaging... I should be able to set that in SwiftKey so I can make a decision on what to do. I thought the keyboard was just broken. As an end-user, how are we supposed to know that the keyboard is making a decision to insert a chunk of text rather than the chosen image just because it's using some arbitrary limit that someone believes is right?

There should be at least a one-time notification when this is done for the first time so the end user understands that this was an application design decision vs a bug/problem.

Second thought: why even show the gif in the first place if you can't send it? Sending the url is crazy with all of the phishing scams there are these days.  I never click random links that people send me in email... Why would I do it elsewhere?

It's pretty lame that we have to send a url instead of the actual gif. This was working fine on my Note 8 until the update. Please revert back, and/or allow the user to choose to send the gif or the url.

Any updates on this? I have been using SwiftKey for years, and years. Gifs are part of today's world. Please get this working consistently. It's not like it's a problem for a very small percentagecof US users. Android and in particular the Note 8 to be specific, are extremely popular. I'd really like to see this working consistently without having to use other apps or go to the trouble of downloading the gifts and attaching from my gallery.
What's also odd to me as you reference size limits, I have advanced messaging turned on which allows me to send pretty much as large a text as my carrier will accept. I have sent some very large files before.
Regardless, please help us to continue loving your app.

Just did the most recent update 2 days ago, now my gifs won't load into my text messages as images, only as URL. Don't understand why this is happening. Has nothing to do with the size of my text from carrier which is Verizon. How can I fix this?

I just started using SwiftKey because Gboard doesn't seem to support gif attachments in Verizon message+. I'm using a Note 8. How come when I am responding to a text does it make me reenter all of the people in the conversation in order to send the gif? Kind of a pain when you are already in a conversation with multiple people.

    Hi Dennis,

This is because Verizon messages does not support the new Android Share API. Since this is a system app and is hardly updated, who knows when it will be supported.

I recommend using a 3rd party SMS app from the Play Store that gets regular updates and features.

Android Messages, Textra, etc. Those apps support direct GIF sharing (without) having to re-pick your contacts.

This is up to the app developer to implement.

    @F Dinkler,

The same response applies to what I said above. System apps are usually not the best as they only get updated with the OS. 3rd party apps generally provide a better experience because that is all they focus on.

    I'd explore other messaging apps.

So I know I'm bumping an old thread but I'm curious if there is a followup on this? I use a galaxy s8 plus on tmobile. Using the default Samsung messaging app as well the default Samsung keyboard. I can send GIFs directly to the text as a mms using their gif feature. However if I swap to SwiftKey it turns to a url. Is there any progresses on you guys figuring out a way to allow people who want the url vs wanting the image to go through as an mms? I understand that there are restrictions based on the stock app as well as service provider but if you aren't affected by either of those is there a way to allow users to send the gif directly to mms?

    Bonjour,

J'ai un Xiaomi avec l'application sms par défaut, et l'envoi de gif est également impossible. En effet, seul l'url du gif apparait dans le message plutôt que l'image animée. Comment résoudre ce problème ?

    Merci

Samsung Note 9, T-Mobile. Trying to send gifs in a chat app called Discord. It's very popular for the gaming community to chat, and meme's and gifs are aplenty there. Mine are the only ones that post a link... It's not on their end obviously.

I don't understand wtf is going on!? A 1 year old thread? Really? Come on. I want to keep using your app because you have the advantage of years of correct text/word predictions, but if I need to go elsewhere, then maybe that's what I have to do...

Please respond and hopefully there can be a resolution on this sometime soon. I'm a big fan, but come on now.....

My gifs were working fine up till a couple weeks ago maybe? I'm not sure on the time line but it was recent.

Then the app was updated and it started to just send the urls. Same situation as everyone else.

Will it correct the problem if I revert to an older version of the app manually?
