    since a and @ are on the same key it sounds like a matter of your finger being on the key a little longer than with other keys. We like to think that every tap is the same duration but it's not.. the first thing I would try is to lengthen the duration of time that it waits before using symbols. in settings, the layout and keys. the it's at the bottom. So assuming it's at something like 250 milliseconds you may want to increase it to 300 or even 350. I'm sure that it doesn't have to be increased by much since it doesn't do it on all keys. If you slide it all the way to the right I'm certain this Behavior. But then you will likely get frustrated waiting for those alternate symbols to come up when you need them. So the ideal setting for you is going to be somewhere in between where is now and all the way to the right. Just fiddle with it a little until you get it where you want it.
