Voice typing keeps cutting off in Google Docs - SwiftKey on Android
RespondidaAbout a week ago (about Sept. 25, 2020), my Google Voice Typing, which I use with SwiftKey (now owned by Microsoft), stopped working. The microphone stayed on in listening mode for only about two to three seconds (depending on my device), unless I kept talking rapidly and unnaturally without any pauses, almost as though I were reading a book for one of those speeded up commercials. If I paused at all, or stopped to think briefly, the microphone would shut off, and I'd have to tap it again to continue. Sometimes it seems like it doesn't hear me at all after I tap 'Tap to start', or maybe just hears a few words, stops listening in the middle of a sentence, and then stops a few seconds afterwards, as though I had stopped speaking. It never used to work like this… I was able to use it very efficiently to compose writings on Google Docs. I would be able to pause from 5 to 10 seconds before continuing speaking.
I wonder if the speech buffer is filling up, and that's turning off the microphone, and then it stops a few seconds later because it's not hearing anything anymore.
This degradation happened about the same time on all my Android devices where I used Voice Typing. I noticed that I was asked to agree to permissions again when this problem started, and the user interface also changed, so I think that this happened because of a faulty upgrade.
I haven't yet found anyone else complaining about this happening recently. I also wonder if it's some app I installed that uses the microphone, but I can't find anything so far.
Any ideas…? Thanks. David
P.S. I tried Voice Typing in Google Docs on my Chromebook laptop, and the microphone stays on for about 23 seconds after I stop talking. This is how it should work on my Android devices, and pretty much how it used to work, although I'm not sure it stayed on quite that long. I wish there were a setting on it so it would stay on indefinitely until you turned it off.
P.P.S. I just replaced SwiftKey with Gboard on my Android tablet. Now Google Voice Typing works just fine. In fact, it appears to stay on for a very long time before turning off, just the way I would like it to act. Strange that a Google update has just effectively destroyed one of Microsoft's SwiftKeys most attractive features… Hopefully, it was just an unfortunate coincidence.
And too bad that Gboard is apparently not as good as SwiftKey. I guess I'll find out...
Hi David,
Sorry for the delayed reply and for the trouble.
Your Microsoft SwiftKey Keyboard utilizes Google Voice technology to power this feature, so unfortunately we have little control over this. In this case, we would suggest you to contact Google directly and they can advise further for the Voice typing feature. Any further questions, please let us know via https://aka.ms/sk-support. Thank you.
