What do you mean by GIF button? Is the emoji key you're referring?

Meanwhile, the behavior of enter key is controlled by foreground app. eg: in Google Search, it's a search button, in some chatting apps, it's send button, etc.

OK so in whatsapp it means the gif button is the same as the send. When I go to send it opens gifs instead. If I time the presses wrong then I accidentally send strange gifs. Since I use whatsapp for work as well, I obviously can't have this. To me it seems that a long press to bring up gifs and short to send rather than the other way around would make sense.

Unfortunately it's not controlled by SwiftKey. It's WhatsApp overrides the enter key function.

Alpert thanks for the reply. It maybe controlled by WhatsApp but I'm sure it's in swiftkeys interest to get it changed.

To now I fixed it by switching to Google keyboard. Seems to work fine and the emoji or gif button is in a separate position. I enjoyed SwiftKey for many years and bought different themes etc but this was a major problem for me

If the emoji key is set to be a dedicated key, that's no longer the topic of enter key behavior.

I'm sorry to hear you switched to Gboard before knowing SwiftKey has dedicated emoji key as well.

    Anyway, welcome back anytime.
