Symbol entry adds spaces wrongly
RespondidaThere is ZERO reason for a space to be inserted before a colon. Maybe some symbols are ok with an inserted space but never that one. I spend a lot of effort removing spaces added before dashes as well. This has been a problem for YEARS and I would like an explanation as to why you would insert spaces that have to be removed and why you haven't corrected this. I assure you, there is no justification for this keyboard behavior -- it would be much better for users to have to enter the spaces they want before symbols than to remove the ones they don't -- so please make a fix.
Hello Don, can you provide some more information?
Do you get the space when you insert a prediction or type without inserting a prediction? Thank you.
No prediction, just entering text. Type a word, add a colon, and a space is inserted before the colon. In terms of automatic space insertion, a colon should be treated the same as a period or comma, with no space inserted before it.
I'm replying because it's an annoyance for me as well. It's all over the place, this complaint.
The space appears with or without a prediction. And it also happens with the semi - colon, semicolon ;colon :and spaces disappear whenever you're trying to just type sentences, and then you realize that the predictive text hasn't been helping you, but actually keeping you from being efficient.
I'm typing this on my Pixel 4,updated just this afternoon. I uninstalled SwiftKey, and accepted the US English language, and downloaded and installed the Latinamerica Spanish keyboard as well, which is what I had previously.
I was in the support area for a completely different issue btw.
Hi Don Teeter thank you for the information. Do you type or do you use flow?
Hi Jamie Cassetta thanks for the information. Are you typing or are you using flow?
I use flow typically, but type when necessary. Obviously when I use a symbol I long press on the appropriate key.
Hi Don Teeter thanks for the information. When you flow and add a colon, the space is added. If you type and add a colon, there should be no space. Is this the case for you or do you get a space when typing and then adding a colon?
If I understand you correctly, you are saying if I flow a word and a colon a space is inserted, whereas if I type the word and add a colon a space is not inserted. This is correct. My position is that a space should never be inserted before a colon. I am now guessing that during flow, a space is always added after a word. Yet this is untrue, because periods are managed correctly. A colon should be treated exactly as a period. No space before, one space after. As for capitalization, which happens after a period, I don't personally think that matters, so they can go ahead program the use of colons and periods identically.
Some symbols are used both ways, sometimes with a space before, and sometimes without. An example of this is the dash. This is why in my opinion, user experience and programming efficiency are both improved by simply never adding a space in front of any symbol.
No, wait, that's not true. Spaces will never be wanted before a dollar sign. OK, I'll stop driving the conversation. :-)
It doesn't seem to matter if using flow or typing, like I'm doing now: hmm. That's idiosyncratic. It didn't add the space. It's frustrating!
Ugh, I meant it's frustrating that it doesn't always happen so it's difficult to recreate the added space. Sorry about that.
Hi Don Teeter thanks for the additional feedback :) I understand. I'd suggest to submit a feature request here https://support.swiftkey.com/hc/en-us/requests/new and we'll pass it onto the right team for further evaluation.
Hi Jamie Cassetta thanks for the information. In your case you would like to type "now :" is this correct? Did you type or flow when doing to?
