Keyboard not functioning on sites added to homescreen
Hi all,
I use Swiftkey for several years now and am very pleased with it.
I have created several small websites for personal use. Some of them require input in text or number fields. When viewing the sites in Safari the Swiftkey keyboard works perfectly. But when the same site is added to the home screen it doesn't always work.
Any ideas where the problem could be?
Hi Guy,
Can you share a video of the issue happening and leave some examples URLs
Hi Ryan,
thanks for looking.
I made a sample page at https://egregius.be/swiftkey/index.php
It holds just to input fields, one should open the alfa keyboard and the other numeric keyboard.
In Safari (on iPhone SE, iOS 12.1.3) it all works great without any problem. But when you do a 'add to homescreen' in safari to add it as a mobile app on the homescreen it sometimes workes, and sometimes not.
I'll try to catch another iPhone to make a video of it.
Hi Guy,
I'm not sure what you mean by it doesnt work. iOS now lets you natively record you screen, so you wont need a 2nd phone.
https://www.imyfone.com/phone-data-transfer/how-to-record-screen-on-ios-12/
Doesn't work means that you can't type anything and/or the keyboard doesn't switch to numeric.
I did 2 screencasts:
Video1: https://egregius.be/swiftkey/video1.mp4
Starting in Safari to show that the keyboard works and follows the input type number. After that I open the same page from a homescreen button where the keyboard doesn't work.
Video2: https://egregius.be/swiftkey/video2.mp4
To show that it sometimes works I restarted my iPhone. This time it didn't block after several attempts, but it will do eventually.
In the meantime I also learned that the same issue is there when using the web preview from Telegram.
Hi Guy,
Thanks for the video. I actually got it to reproduce today. The phone had basically been not used all weekend and it was the first thing I did.
I unlocked it, opened the saved URL and it would not type. All I had to do though was kill Safari and re-open it and it started working for me again.
Hi Ryan,
Thanks for testing and some kind of work around but it should be happening right?
If I need to close all Safari based apps when it happens I have to sxipe 20 seconds... Yeah, I have quit some small webapps that I use.
Isn't there a way to debug it? Is it something I can do with a beta or test version?
Hi Guy,
I've just shared this community topic and your videos with the dev team asking for some more input. I'm not currently aware of how to get debugging info from the app. Stay tuned.
Hi Ryan,
Any news from dev team?
I have the same issue on ios 12.1.4 and SwiftKey 2.4.7
Basically visit xe.com add to home screen. Then when you open up the app and try and type the keyboard is frozen.
If you disable swiftkey everything works as expected
That's exactly the problem indeed.
Any updates on this?
iOS 12.2 released, still the same issue.
Any news about this?
At the beginning of this issue I was very pleased with the speed of feedback, unfortunately it was of very short time.
We're 3 months further and still no word or a solution.
Anyone knows a good alternative for Swiftkey?
I have the same problem. The issue also seems to occur with other third party keyboards — but apparently only when using the add to homescreen feature on Safari. The sites seem to work fine in "regular" Safari.
I used to think it was a SwiftKey issue, now I think it's a Safari bug.
I also noticed that during a search for a Swiftkey replacement.
But I do believe that the Swiftkey developers are in the best place to pick this up with Apple. I don't even know how to contact them.
Well, the Dutch prediction in iOS 13 is working pretty good, so it's bye bye Swiftkey for me. Mainly because of the lack of response here of Swiftkey support.
IPhone 7
2022 and the issue is still happening
Hi, sorry for the trouble. Can you please make sure that the Backup & sync feature is enabled then try to uninstall then reinstall Microsoft SwiftKey? https://support.swiftkey.com/hc/en-us/articles/201203172-What-is-Backup-Sync-
