I resolved this issue by moving to Gboard. It's vastly improved now. No I'm not affliated with Google but frustrated of this enough to make the switch.

Agree, I also moved to GBoard after the previous comment. Only feature missing is the space after punctuation, but that's already in the next beta release so I'll wait for it. Such a relieve to not backspace every bloody word to get to the period mistakenly added before it. Pity swiftkey did not provide any support over here.

I tried GBoard after that comment by Sam, and whereas it does seem much harder to make period mistakes, but the prediction is nothing close to SwiftKey's. After you've used SwiftKey for a couple of times, it knows the names, nicknames, places, phone numbers etc that you use in your texts and email messages (what you are viewing, as well as previous ones). It doesn't look like GBoard "learns" these. Also I often press n instead of spacebar, example "hownarenyountoday", and SwiftKey's way of showing the space-separated set of words as alternative is clearer than in GBoard. Also I find the way some extra keys and punctuation is available is much better than in GBoard.

Trust me I'd love to be able to find something better than SwiftKey, but those things trump period errors for me, I contend with them so I can get these features.

I don't know why SwiftKey authors are being so stubborn about this.

I love this keyboard but the period issue is a real annoying problem.

I am right handed and I believe that if the period key was left of the space bar I could still easily use it when needed but not typing it constantly by mistake.

I think a toggle in the settings enabling period left or right of space bar might be an effective quick fix

    Cheers

There isn't even a need for period as a short press key, it is available as 2 spaces *and* on the numbers keypad *and* as long press on the current period key. So swiftkey Devs: replace the period key by space and problem fixed (so yes you would have a space *bar* and a spake key, but the latter would show !,.? on long press).

please SwiftKey listen to the problems, there should be an option to remove the period key and just make space bar longer so it isn't always accidentally being pressed... just put it on the left side with the comma key...

I'm so glad to know I'm not alone. Period AND commas everywhere.

So after using gboard I got tired of the prediction. Shame Google can help me out of my worst gibberish when I search but can't save me me for nothing on gboard. So I went back to swift. I did however manage to ease the burden of the period. Not eliminate but lessen it by about 25% by changing keyboard size to large in my galaxy s9. It hasn't gotten rid of the problem but it's tolerable until a fix is in place. You guys should try that if this is an option for you and aren't already on large. You get used to it.

hi! I had this problem like crazy on gboard (and yes, the predictions on that are awful) so I switched back to swiftkey, which was even worse with the period.

however, (possible SOLUTION) I just removed the dedicated emoji key, which slightly widens the spacebar key.....so far it seems like a huge improvement but I also haven't been doing any frantic typing. right now i'm typing on my computer. anyway....glad im not the only one with the period problem!

I also started to have this problem. I don't know if it's because of a new screw ratio, as suggested before, or a new design of Swiftkey.
I think moving the punctuation half a mm to the right would solve a lot of frustration. Right now, the size differences only changes the heights of the keys. An option to change the width of the two lowest rows might be a solution?

This was infuriating to me. And I found a setting that says double tap space bar to add a period and it was turned on. I turned it off and haven't had a problem since. So I was hitting the period I was double tapping the space bar when typing quickly. What a relief.

I turned the double tap feature off but still have the period problem. Except for now it's not doing it, of course wtf

I was excited to try this too today but didn't change much for me. One technique I noticed makes a big difference is which finger I use on right hand: with index I don't get the problem much. This requires that I hold the phone with left hand, leaning against fingers and held on bottom by pinky, and typing with left thumb and right index.

Same issue, its making me look like an idiot with the amount of '. {capatalize word in middle of intended sentence}' constantly cutting into sentences. I just started using this two or three weeks ago and I love it, except that issue which is a major issue IMO.

Glad to know that I'm not the only one with this godforsaken problem. It has gotten to a point where I feel like throwing the phone everytime I. Type.

Why is this still an issue? Obviously there are plenty of people having this problem. Is there even any plans to. Address. This issue? (I didn't intend to put those periods in. It's due to the problem that everyone is struggling with.)

Also happening with my lgv20, had a galaxy s6 and happened all the time, my wife had a pixel and now has a pixel 2.  We both consistantly his the period key instead of the spacebar.  what every user here is requesting is to have an option to remove period key.  I don't understand why that would be so hard to do.

Also both of us have the emoji key off.

Are they even listening? It'd be nice to at least have options in the settings to move the keys. Or move the enter key up a couple rows like it is on regular qwerty keyboards.

I don't think they care. Did you know that swiftkey was acquired by microsoft in early 2016? Apparently for the AI. So my guess is that, this being a free product, they are not going to bother providing any support that isn't critical. Should the issue of this thread be critical? Well google Play says there have been 100 million downloads. That's a lot! And only 35 upvotes, why would Microsoft care? They want the data that we give them every time we type. As long as the experience is pretty good, why risk breaking something? There may not even be unit tests available, maybe there were never any or they were lost. Let's face it, the quality of predictions is outstanding and outweighs the inconvenience of the spurious periods which a small percentage of users have. The ratings on Play y are extraordinarily positive, another reason not to care. Although it is tempting to say a let's develop an open source one, the reality is that this is no small endeavour, storing a Meg of data for 100M people and retrieving it efficiently, all this is a fair bit of effort and cloud costs

It just sucks that they don't care, clearly a lot of people are having this issue. Swiftkey is the best keyboard available on android, I face the accidental period tap all the time. It'd be amazing if they listen and provide an option to enable or disable it. I tried gboard, I made less accidental touches on period but it isn't even closer to swiftkey. I'm using swiftkey again but today I took out my time to figure it out and found this thread.
Hope they see this and provide us with some support.

I'm starting to be more than annoyed by typing 3-4 periods in the same sentence. Sometimes, I don't even know how I accidentally press the period instead of "'s". it was fine with every phones I had until my old s7 and my actual p20 pro.

I have a ticket opened for the developers and nobody has even looked at it.  My next step is to comment whenever they release a new post on instagram and youtube with this forum url in their comment section.  If we all reply to or like my comments maybe then they will notice.  Below is the youtube video that I recently commented to.

    Potential solution -

Use a larger sized keyboard, type more carefully.

I had this problem and thought it was a glitch. But I think I may have been hitting the period button by mistake. I increased the size of my keyboard (from small to medium) and tried to be a little more careful and it has gone away.

Give it a try and good luck.
