I have been reading the comments and responses. I will take you at your word that good things are coming. I have enjoyed your stuff for a long time, therefore I will give you the benefit of the doubt. I don't like it, but I will hang back and see what you do. But please, don't take a year on this. I am not sure when this change happened, but this thread seems fairly fresh. So, follow through.

I had a thought last night about where you might be headed, and I hope I am right. So much of modern gfx is vector which makes everything easier with the multitudes of screen resolutions. So my thought is... we download a 'style', not 'theme' meaning button border shape / fill. Then within that style, we have a selection of fruity colorful options to play with. Or even better, we get an advanced mode which has a list of objects and border types (key background, key borders, main alphabet & Numbers, secondary key options, etc), and these things we can color to our hears desire. If it's vector based, then there is it can be altered programmatically, meaning, not requiring another export from photoshop or whatever the theme was designed in. This means that beyond our gripes we could spin up our favorite theme ourselves, and dial it in even more... you know, those little thing we wished we're just a little different. If that's where you are headed, I would be willing to wait. More... if this is where you are headed, please make it possible to save the profile so when we switch phones we can pack it up and take it with us. Heck, I would even pay a few more bucks just to have that too.

you keep telling us that this will be better, and you'll "look" at bringing back the themes that clearly a fair number of your customers were using, but you aren't willing to give us a clear timeline or any real information. Then you just say "we already answered this question". No, you didn't answer anything. What you essentially said is "Just you wait and see, it'll be great". That's not an answer, that's just the worst kind of marketing speak. Since we all know that most people won't bother to tell you that they're upset I think you should be able to see that you've upset at least a good portion of your customer base. If you can't come up with a better answer about when you'll fix what used to be the best keyboard available then I, and I suspect several others, will find an alternative that meets our needs and stop using your product altogether.

    Hi everyone,

Thanks again for your patience. As you know, we had to remove a few older themes for fresh installs to improve performance and reduce the size of the APK. But we want to make sure that whatever we fix, redesign, or bring new will meet your needs! We’d love to know a bit more about what you loved and are missing about the old themes.

    • Are you missing it because you’ve been using it forever and it just feels right on your phone?
    • Is there something from a usability perspective that made your previous theme better that we can replicate?
    • Are you concerned about creating an account to download new themes?
    • Anything else?

We really appreciate your input and will use it to make themes and SwiftKey better moving forward.

    Best,

    Ryan

Two things: The holo theme was easy on my eyes and easy to see in general, it made the keyboard easier to use due to the color and configuration. Secondarily, I got used to it and not having it is simply annoying. Change for change sake is not always the best answer.

I use a three year old phone and I've never had a problem with the size of the APK or performance of the app. Devices are getting bigger storage all the time and download speeds are increasing, why the obsession with reducing APK size?

FYI, this still isn't an answer or even a hint of a timeline. I installed Google's Gboard today. Let me know when Switfkey is fixed and maybe I'll come back. If you decide to actually deliver the product that your customers want.

    Ryan,

Pumpkin was functioning very well in different situations. Not hurt the eye and very pleasant in the dark, unlike all other themes with white keys which are available now.

The white secondary keys on pumpkin were also great, providing good contrast when focused on them, but still not hurt the eye as these small white letters sailed on the calm orange sea of main keys. It was a perfect balance. Worked very well in daylight as well, visible in any situation.

Take current theme pulse green as an example for a bad design. (or any other current) Main keys are too white, the grey secondary keys are almost invisible next to them therefore very difficult to find. Not functional and painful for the eyes to look at.

For me, it's Pitch. I'm very angry the theme is gone. I saw it well. That's why I used it. This is the reason why people should only use free apps, because eventually the developers screw you! What's really frustrating is that I was one of your biggest fanboys. I turned a lot of people on to Swiftkey. However, today I took some advice from those in this forum. I installed another keyboard. It's a sad day for me

    Ryan,

Hope you guy bring back some of the themes that was "lost" because i love the "dark" theme.  Switched to my new phone today and couldnt find that theme.  Would be awesome for Swiftkey to give us a timeline as it will give us hope and put pressure on you guys to keep the promise :D

Guys stop threaten to use a different keyboard, Swiftkey is the best and they are working to make it better.  Sometime you have to take a step backward to take two steps forward.  The keyboard is free to use so give them some slack.

    Thank for the great keyboard.

I paid for the app before it went free as well.  No big deal to me it was like $5, got way more out of it than the cost that i paid for.

My point is that give them sometime.

    Ryan,

Yes, part of the problem is that I (we) have been using a theme forever and are just used to it, but then, I spent a LOT of time looking for a keyboard/theme that worked for me.  I'm used to it because it worked.  Don't fix what isn't broken, and from the user's standpoint, it wasn't broken.

All the new themes are mostly one color with a different color for letters.  My old theme had one color for letters, another for symbols, and two more for the keys themselves.  Very easy to train the eye/brain to look for one color, and ignore the other.

Bring back holo. Certainly you could tell the most used themes and holo is the best as far as color and contrast.

You have to be kidding me! Just reset and upgraded my phone and my Pumpkin theme is gone! WTF?!

I am a LONG time user and paid for the app to support the devs because the Pumpkin theme was a color I liked, an easy on the eyes. It Was the perfect balance with definition of the keys themselves, the color could be seen day or night, and the smaller symbols were white and stood out.

Very upset Pumpkin is gone as I have had it for years on many phones and never would have changed it and always the first thing I install after I flash a new ROM or get a new phone.

FYI I never noticed any performance issues, EVER, on many old phones so the dev's reasoning to me is faulty.

Let us who want the old themes have them and let us worry about APK size and/or performance issues.

While you are at it give us a theme search function, or put them in alphabetical order, and let us delete themes not in use.

So you decided to take away themes that your PAYING customers were using for years, just like that? Wow you really gave your client base the shaft there, gj.

Remember when Microsoft decided it was good to remove the start button in Windows 8, because they simply knew better than their customers whats good for them? Yeah that went totally great for them.

GIVE ME BACK THE PUMPKIN THEME >:(

Obviously the complete no brain thing to do would be to add the deleted themes that were embedded in the .apk onto the theme store at no charge. You took the time to develop them, judging from the above comments people obviously love them so I can't think of a single reason why you wouldn't do this? I'm guessing it would take about 3 minutes and 15 key clicks to achieve too?

    Thanks in anticipation

    @Ryan P ..

Regarding your questions, i will answer them:

    • Are you missing it because you’ve been using it forever and it just feels right on your phone?
The Sky, Holo and other missing themes were very simple and clear, the key limit were very visible.

    • Is there something from a usability perspective that made your previous theme better that we can replicate?
      1. Yes, for example the key limits or lines, this should be something that we can add to any of your keyboard themes! This is standard for example in Google Keyboard (Gboard). We want simply to see the keys with visible limits in between, not just one part of colon!
      2. The worse thing with "Material Themes" are the keys in other languages than "latin" For example Arabic letter keys are very small and not easy to see them well visible!

    • Are you concerned about creating an account to download new themes?
Oh Yeah! Also would be even more easier to let us customise the the borders in between the keys or to choose to have well visible borders or not!

    • Anything else?
For next time, when you want to do this big move, you need to communicate this change in a proper way, you have many channels to do that especially through E-Mail or Facebook to tell the users about this because not so many wants to use the support forums!

I see your action to remove the older themes as a disrespect to us (End Users), you did not ask for our opinion first, you did not offer a downloadable option before you remove the themes! You should give us alternatives before you take a such big action! I am also sure that many users still does not know about what you have done and if you don't make the downloadable option available very soon, i guess you will receive more angry actions from the users!

Got to thank you for making such a bone headed move. It forced me to find a new keyboard app and once I did it made me realize all the little things that SwiftKey did that I didn't like, such as it's draconian text prediction that was slowing me down. So...thanks for killing my favorite theme!!

    Hi Ryan

To answer your questions. With regard to Holo

    • Are you missing it because you’ve been using it forever and it just feels right on your phone?

I find the colors are not too bright but still defined, the key edges are clearly visible and the second key function are clearly recognizable. Most of the new layouts don't have clear key edges, are silly colors and don't clearly show the background key functions. It's not just how "pretty" two colors look together, their frequencies are also important to show the definition. Like older versions of android used greens & blue together so if you are over 30 your eyes don't see the definition./ Most of the new layouts are form over function.

    • Is there something from a usability perspective that made your previous theme better that we can replicate?

Just the clarity of visions without dramatic colors, outlines, back grounds and second key functions.

    • Are you concerned about creating an account to download new themes?

No. All good, I paid and have an account.

    • Anything else?

Please hurry up :-) I really hate the keypad on my tablet. If I have to swap apps for my tablet I'll change on my phone too. Sorry mate but you have really taken a step backwards in ease of use. And just gone for pretty - in someone elses opinion - note mine.

You could have just removed the useless themes instead of the ones people use. To answer your questions: we miss those themes because we find them useful and apt for our use. Many people, if you'll believe me don't like garish colors. And yeah, I don't think creating another account just for the sake of a keyboard theme should be necessary. They should be baked into or downloadable from the app.

i agree with Konkonkaos and Euronight !

We want simple and clear themes! 95% of the themes for SwiftKey are useless, too flashy, too fancy and not to use on daily basis! They give the impression that SwiftKey did not grow up as the public who uses their keyboard!

So Mr. Ryan P if you want to convince us that you removed many themes because they are too old, then i can tell you that was really stupid! You can't just remove few themes to reduce the APK,

I will teach you (yes i will teach you, i am a teacher) how to do it in a more proper way!

    1. When end users download SwiftKey from Google Play, there should be only ONE standard theme that is very simple and basic.

    2. When the end-user run the start up wizard, there should be an option to choose another theme by downloading it from a web store that belongs to Swift-key without any need to create an additional account!

    3. You should add the possibility to let the end user have only one layout but gives the possibility to change the colour of the keyboard! That should be something standard!

If just do as above mentioned in 1, 2 and 3, you will have a great usability and user friendly app for everyone!

Bear in mind also, that many other languages than "latin" may needs larger fonts on keyboard if they run multiple languages, for example what "Euronight" mentioned regarding that when having "Arabic+English" because the English letter will looks great but when switching to Arabic, the fonts are small and hard to read out! This is also basic! I am not sure why i should point out all these things for you because this should be something that is standard!

Hope you don't get mad but the truth is we are disappointed, angry and wants you to be better not worse! Otherwise we would never bother writing anything to you, we could simply switch to another keyboard!

Just curious as to what keyboard you switched to. I've tried to get over my Pumpkin theme removal and can't find anything close. I also have a few things I don't like about SwiftKey so if I can't get the theme I want I may as well switch it up like you did. Thanks!

    @Dave Young
I haven't completely decided yet. I've narrowed it down to two keyboards, luckily i have two phones to test them out. Both are vastly different.

I have gboard on one phone which is very similar to SwiftKey and Fleksy on the second phone. Fleksy is very, very, VERY different than SwiftKey but honestly will probably end up becoming my daily driver. It's very fast and i can see where if i give it enough time, I'll probably love it, it's just a huge learning curve coming from SwiftKey.

If i decide i can't get used to it then i have gboard as a fallback

What frustrates me most about the decision is this. The explanation given is 'to reduce the APK size and improve speed and performance of the app'. Ok, if this is so, then why not include one white generic material design theme, with a message that says 'hey in order to reduce the APK size and improve speed and performance of the app' we have removed all themes except for this one. You are free to continue to use this one, but if you want to use one of the other themes, and/or your favorite beloved theme, you can find it here at this link. Here are the instructions on how to download and install them.' Simple. Yes, I'd consider it a pain, but only a temporary pain and in the end, I'd love it because I'd download my favorite theme, Pitch, the stupid Halloween and Christmas ones I use at the Holidays for a couple of days, and I'd only have four themes installed!!!

    Win-Win!!!!

No, what this strikes me as is the dreaded Developer Disease known as 'Change for Changes Sake'.

    please bring back dusk.

I have been using it since I bought SwiftKey (when it was a paid app) and naturally am used to it.

it offers a good mix of functionality with clear secondary icons, and simple design that is not flashy, yet not dull black/grey like other usable themes (using carbon at the moment).

please bring back dusk and all other original themes.
