This is something that's been occurring since we introduced the new way Flow works. Because of this process, a space is inserted between the semicolon and last word typed. While this may be useful for someone who uses ":)" a lot, it may not be for everyone. We're currently beta testing an option to turn of the space after Flow, which could help with this issue, but I'll keep you posted if anything changes on this front.

Please, do! A space before a colon or a semicolon is incorrect in most (if not all) stylesheets. For someone who uses the phone for their work and with a lot of swyping this may be quite a lot of extra work. Thank you in advance!

I agree. Please fix this. As for the ":)" -- if the colon is not followed by a parenthesis, the SwiftKey software should automatically delete the preceding space. (Or if no space before a colon or semicolon is made the default, SwiftKey can add the space there if a parenthesis follows the colon/semicolon.) To be honest, I'm not sure this requires much of a beta test. Thanks!

Please fix this already. It's my number 1 complaint about SwiftKey.

Yes please fix it. It really does slow me down. I don't think I've ever wanted to put a space before a colon or semicolon.

Please fix this. And while you're at it, i would also like it if the letter i can be capitalised when typed.

Can we get an update on the fix for this? Have a space automatically inserted before a colon drives new crazy! Please fix this!

Yes, number one request for me too. I'm surprised this is not already there, even in SwiftKey Beta on Android (the common usage is no space before these signs).

One aspect not mentioned here so far is the SwiftKey behavior where the space that is auto-inserted is removed once certain punctuation marks are inserted, like the comma and period. So the space before other signs like colon, semicolon, slash, dash (yes, please – and the space after it) can also be handled the same way.

    Thanks.

Has there been any progress on this? Every time I type a colon it auto-inserts a space BEFORE it. To make matters worse, I'm having trouble with my keyboard layout not consistently showing the arrow keys, which makes deleting those spaces difficult.

No progress whatsoever. I think the developers (or whoever is responsible) don't realise how much time you may actually be wasting on constantly correcting this. Especially if you have a setting that requires you to constantly specify or exemplify - with a colon.

    Hey guys and girls.
I've also been struggling with this ever since I started using SwiftKey.
Yes, it does slow down typing immensely, but here are the reasons why this is the way it's going to be :

    1. SwiftKey (like anything else) is designed for the younger, faster generation who don't mind spelling and grammar mistakes. It's all about keyword and emoji typing - nothing needs to be complete. They've all adapted to their new "language".

    2. This is a FREE app, meaning you get what you get. If you want something that works for your style, you need to fork out some cash for something like Swype. Unfortunately, my mobile provider doesn't allow that, so I'm stuck using SwiftKey. Trust me -
Chrooma, Multiling, Fleksy etc are much worse!

    Learn to adapt. I did.

Richard Honey: actually, it wasn't free when I started using it. I still have my receipt and the flaw didn't exist then. Obviously all of us are able to adapt, but it's a minor inconvenience in an application that is supposed to make our lives easier. Also, just because some young people aren't concerned, it doesn't seem an especially good reason to introduce a bug. Many in the social media generation do care, by the way. Facebook posts and tweets are generally punctuated, and usually correctly. I am in my early thirties and when I get messages in block capitals with no punctuation, they invariably come from someone far older than me.

Richard: 1) How do you know about the targeting? Do you have any insider knowledge? Have you seen any official statement by the company to this effect? Do you have access to any statistics that would confirm that Swiftkey's user base is predominantly young/careless etc.? Or is it just a generalisation that everything nowadays is created for the younger generation? And that this generation doesn't give two **** about spelling?

    2) Why do you assume that free necessarily means uninterested and unresponsive on the part of the developer? Isn't 'free' a simplification of the entanglement in the network of varied customer-company relationships where some bottom-up signalling may eventually get through anyways?

This said, I'm getting tired. I switched from paid Swype. Can't even remember what the bugs were there, but I'm seriously thinking of switching back or searching for something else, still. Any suggestions anyone? Especially for something that learns efficiently over unconventional vocabularies in two languages?

Still hoping to get a fix for this; I just want colon and semicolon to behave the same way as period, comma, exclamation mark, and question mark. (at least optionally) And how many people still type text emotes instead of using the emoji keyboard? (I know I do, but I'm one of the ones asking for this behavior to change)

Also, why is this marked as "Answered"? The problem has not been solved.

Absolute deal breaker. I installed SwiftKey for the first time half an hour ago, ran straight into this problem, Google led me to this page and now I'm uninstalling. The answer above suggests you think non-smiley semicolons are a weird edge case. They aren't ;I use them all the... Aargh, I cannot live like this! Bye bye SwiftKey.

I don't understand why this issue isn't being addressed. It doesn't seem like a stretch to code the colon to behave like all the other punctuation. And now that someone else made the comment, I was sure I paid for SwiftKey when I first started using it quite a while back. I don't know what happened after that. I don't mind paying for people's hard work. But for Pete's sake, fix this.

I'm not sure if I wrote here already, but I'm off the devastating drug now for some time (two months?) and I'm so happy ;) I switched to gboard and, frankly, everything is better there. Not just this behaviour. This said, I cannot fully uninstall Swiftkey from my phone because Sony. Well. Anyways, probably never coming back. Bye, bye, Swiftkey.

Not only the colon and semicolon, but also the hyphen and slash symbol. And Unlike, colons and semicolons, there should be no space *after* a hyphen, but SwiftKey adds a space on both sides! That is a truly dumb - ass, I mean dumb-ass thing to do. I use a slash frequently between two similar words, and there shouldn't /can't be a space before the slash! C'mon, SwiftKey, get it together. I never knew how much I relied on Skype. I tried Gboard but couldn't handle that there's no key with / as a dedicated secondary character, so I came to SwiftKey, only to find that SwiftKey phucks up the slash too, along with hyphens, colons, and semicolons. This really sucks. Please, please fix this nonsense!

I have a paid version and the beta version.
I have been frustrated with this issue since my first experience with SwiftKey when I downloaded it at least three Android versions and four phones ago. I have been hoping and waiting for this improvement to be made since. I am now past the point of waiting, and I need to agree with these whom have already complained about the issue.
Please consider those who are fluent writers of the English language. Whether we use flow or deliberately type more than short abbreviated bursts in text messages, Facebook, Twitter and the like, the correction of this feature is long overdue. There are more of us than you realize needing this corrected. Will you please fix this with the next update? Thanks!

    • This topic, started a year ago,  is not really "answered" as it has been marked above -- it is only "responded."
    • I'm very curious to know what bugs (or features) SwiftKey is working on that are more important than this basic snafu. Is there a list somewhere that we can vote on?
    • I'm getting SwiftKey Insider Community forum invitations in the meantime. Maybe one of the guys working on those can help fix this?...
    • Or just give me access to the source, and I'll code it and hand it to you.

I agree with everyone above. SwiftKey, why don't you answer us? I prefer SwiftKey over all other keyboards but I don't want to use it because it puts in that space after tracing a word then tapping punctuation like : or ; but it doesn't insert the space when tapping! or? Or, or.

SwiftKey: I second Scott P's post right above, and asking for an update on the option to change this Space behavior, which was reported to be in beta-testing two years ago at the top of this page.

Scott P: According to a response I was able to get in another forum four months ago, the reason is the emojis, and more SwiftKey users seem to use them compared to proper punctuation. (That doesn't surprise me, but the notion that people not using : or ; by itself properly do want to have a space before a :) or ;) does...) I'm also sympathetic to the business reason of making that the default behavior. However, there has to be at least an option to change to a non-emoji mode. (Or, they could insert the space before a (semi)colon only if the latter is followed by a parenthesis, slash, etc.)

Note that this is not a feature request – it's a bug in that the standalone usage of (semi)colon is incorrect. It also surprises me how SwiftKey is still able to get away with it while owned by Microsoft for more than last two years. If there's still no fix for this (we're not going to win/convince by numbers here or at a uservoice.*.com), maybe we can file a BBB complaint or bring a class-action suit against SwiftKey or MS, where millennial claims like "Everyone uses the keyboard in a different manner" won't fly, as the standard punctuation is broken for the sake of the majority appeal. (I don't know what other options are there, given the situation so far.)

I just switched back to Gboard because this has been driving me crazy. The reason I abandoned Gboard for Swift Key originally was that Gboard had a bug issue when typing in the Chrome search bar. They have since fixed the problem, something Swift Key seems incapable of doing.

Apparently I'm not the only grammarian who cringes at a space before a colon / semicolon. This appears to be an old issue; is this queued for development soon? This can't be a difficult fix.

Holy crow, this thread is two years old? Please implement a solution! How about just reverting this change? Emojis are the dominant chosen expression. I only see emoticons when people are typing on a physical keyboard from their computer. Also, the way this hinders grammatical typing far exceeds requiring someone typing an emoticon to use the space bar. We have to backspace our physically move the cursor, then repeat this process to continue typing.
