Kevin M Krol, did you uninstall SwiftKey before downloading and installing the previous version?

You're awesome Pavel. This worked great! It's amazing that we have to do this outside of SwiftKey. Thanks so much! I have my Holo theme back!

Obviously not much. 6 pages of people complaining and they still didn't fix it. This is exactly why they continue to lose market share. SwiftKey wasn't developed by them and I'm afraid they're going to run it into the ground.

    Hi all,

I describe the correct procedure for bring back older themes:

    1. - uninstall any version of Swiftkey from the phone

    2. - download version 6.6.0.22 (or older) from Apkmirror for sideload installation. On Apkmirror it's important to select right version for your device and your current Android version (ARM, ARM64, Android 4.0.3+ or Android 6.0+).

3a. - Before installing downloaded version i suggest to disable automatic apps updates in Play Store application.

3b. - install downloaded version and run it,configure it and try all included old themes

    4. - upgrade to the version from Play Store, and enable automatic updates again.

Result is shown on attached screenshots

Between steps 3a and 3b make sure you go into Settings, Security, and turn on Unknown Resources. This allows for side loading an app. After installing go back in and set it to off. I know this step is obvious to many and doesn't need to be stated, but there's some of us that don't know. Again Pavel, thanks so much for this!

I appreciate the loophole to bring back old themes, but I fear that this will lead to less pressure on SwiftKey to bring back the themes.

There's nothing stopping SwiftKey from changing the way themes are stored on the phone in future versions, rendering the current loophole useless.

While you enjoy your old themes, don't stop short until SwiftKey restores the themes officially.

"I wonder what goes on in the heads of Microsoft execs"

    Pretty sure they're not dumb.

SwiftKey as a product probably doesn't generate enough revenue to warrant buying over; they have no incentive to keep it alive. It's the technology or user data they're after.

I can see it being used to build NLP models for AI, where we, the users, are essentially training and correcting its mistakes.

Win-win, until we lose the keyboard we love so much.

I just moved to a replacement Nexus 7 and Holo is missing for me too.

Tried the "back door" method of installing an older version, but it would not install for me. I'm not familiar with installing apps from a downloaded version, though I can see it, but it will not run.

My preference would be that Swiftkey put back at least the Holo theme because so many people mention that. I am using the similar one with the blue (I think -- defective color vision) keys, but I need the white of Holo. Probably should restore Pumpkin as well because that seems like the second most mentioned theme.

I PAID for Swiftkey starting with a 2012 Nexus 7 and had no problems transferring to a 2013. There are good deals on used ones and there is a loyal following and demand.

I want what I paid for -- installed the correct way. How much trouble can that be?

Guys, from cobalt theme began the HISTORY of your keyboard! How could you cut it, remove it? Are you mad?

It's handled by side loading a previous version. See yesterday's (07/15/17) posts for all the details.

As a consumer, I am disappointed with the application.
Any removal of topic should be communicated to its consumers.
The minimum they should do quickly is to put all the themes to download, so anyone, download the theme that you find the best.
I hope they will fix this shortcoming of communication with your users soon.
The theme I always used was HOLO.

I don't wanna be passive aggressive but you are OK keeping such bad taste themes such as Jack O' Lantern, The Graveyard, Easter Chocolate, Carnival, Floral, useless ones like Ninja, and you remove COBALT?

Cobalt and Holo themes gone and I'm sure I paid for at least one of them. Really unhappy about this unilateral decision to remove aforementioned themes. SwiftKey isn't what it was. Bring back these themes please and treat your customers with a little more respect.
    Many thanks

For those who are into Android well beyond a user level, the instructions for side loading an earlier version are probably a simple thing to do. I'm no tech dummy, but my expertise is in other areas. I really don't want to get into it either. My time is needed for other things. Not complaining to those who have found a way to get the old themes back, but because you have found a way doesn't mean we should quit complaining to SwiftKey. There is not one theme with the contrast and bold white keys like Holo. I need it. I don't want cute, I want ease of use.

Where did Ryan P, from the SwiftKey team go? Does he think everyone is happy because a few people have found a way to get the old themes back?

It looks like that SwiftKey will NEVER listen and will force us to accept their decision to reduce the APK file size by removing older themes which we strongly disagree with.

If you look now, there is no response regarding our complains to bring back the older themes, i think they will not do that until we (the majority of us) gives them only 1 star in Play store! This is what i am going to do now! 1 star is what they deserves!

I uninstalled SwiftKey by mistake today and when reinstalling I realized, to my horror, my dear Forest Theme was gone!

To Pavel Stárek: Thank you so much for an easy step-by-step method for me to reunite with my green companion Forest! <3

To Ryan and the SwiftKey team: I've been so pleased with SwiftKey. I've had it since I got my first Android phone many, many years ago. I discussed it with a friend as recently as yesterday! We've both been using it for many years and were praising how much we loved it and it could not compare to any of the other keyboards out there. It sounds silly, I know, but to me the keyboards is how I communicate with a lot of my friends. It feels like part of my voice and how I express myself .To remove the theme I've been "talking with" for years, is like losing a part of my voice.

Please consider.. No, not consider! Just bring back the old themes! It's part of peoples daily life. More than we're aware of.

To everyone who lost their beloved theme: reinstall the old version, like Pavel has told us. It works. :)

I tried Pavel's step-by-step, but could not get a successful install. It wasn't because I missed the security setting change mentioned in a subsequent post. On the archive site there are several older versions to choose from with 20 (if I remember correctly) being the version that made sense for my 2013 Nexus 7, but then it takes me to a page with 5 or 6 versions of 6.6.0.20 and I don't have a clue which one to choose.

    Also...

I do not know if the Nexus 7 has to be in "developer mode" or some other mode that I normally do not have turned on.

I'm not sure the uninstall is really working because there are still SwifyKey data file in the Android/data folder (com.touchtype.swiftkey) folder. Should it be deleted before installing attempted?

What about the keyboard setting? Will the uninstall actually work if I don't switch back to the default (Gboard) keyboard?

So, if anyone could be a little more specific about what I would have to do on the Nexus 7 I will sure try it again.

    Thanks.

    @JOHN RAUSCH

You should be looking at the arm versions since your device should be 32-bit. This will leave you with two options. Choose the 6+ version if you have Android Marshmallow and above.

Developer mode does not need to be turned on.

You don't have to delete the folders.

Well, I managed to install 6.6.0.22 on my Nexus 7 and update the app afterwards leaving me with Holo that I have been using since 2012 or 2013. Family has 5 Nexus 7s and now I will have to look after them.

Thanks Pavel and for the help Jiraffe7.

Thumbs down and 1 star for SwiftKey until they fix this.

Myself and a few others have been in a thread of our own looking where the theme Pitch has gone. Someone said this was the main one for missing themes. And I guess this answers that. Not read the whole thread, but hope they will be coming back.

Hayley, if you read this, have a good look through the thread. There's a way to restore older themes by installing an older version of SwiftKey.

I love Pitch too. It's tidy, easy to read and great great for AMOLED screens.

The excuse about reducing apk size still doesn't explain why these can't even be downloaded afterwards. I'd even pay a nominal fee for it, 50p or something.

Thanks Philip! I'll have a look, I read the first few replies and saw they had taken them out on purpose. I'm not happy. I'm using another black and white one now, but it's not the same and it freezes often.
Its silly that they won't allow us to download it. I was one who paid for it initially too, to support something I enjoyed using and now I'm just annoyed!
